I remember John for his wit and love of life: you couldn’t be in his presence for more than a few micro-seconds before laughter filled the air. We met in 1981 at Brighton Actors’ Workshop where JC was providing music for plays and general mirth for everyone. I remember his advice to me that it would help cast morale if I told them who had “been best” after a performance; I loved his way with words- in everyday speech as well as in his songs- and I loved being about him: a funny, generous, intelligent, warm spirit. Although there were times, years even, when we didn’t see much of each other, whenever we met it was like we’d never been apart and hilarity would be only a pint of Harveys away. It’s hard to imagine JC not being around. How brilliantly Teresa and Jamie have cared for and loved John through this shocking disease. A great way to remember the Geezer would be to raise funds for the Association (a John Clay Tribute Band for the John Clay Tribute Fund?) I just found this email from him, which made me laugh out loud. I’d written to him about meeting up and he was about to watch the England v Andorra football international: "Your Eminence A big 10-4 roger dog copy that good buddy etc. I must repair for a solemn viewing of the pride of English manhood versus Andorra Bryan and her performing yaks. The game will no doubt be followed by the usual rousing chorus of "Who's Sorry Now". For this relief Doors JC" Doors to you too, JC. Love, Paul Hod. (PS You were best)
